UCONN ENGLISH SUMMER READING:
For summer, you will read two books:
First, pick any book of your choosing to read for pleasure. It can be fiction, non-fiction, or technical, and it can be any genre that interests you. It can be very short or very long or somewhere in between. (It can also be a book you are reading for another class if you so choose.) We will be discussing the act of reading as a college-ready practice and your book in particular will be part of the conversation.
Second, you will read the book Mindset by Carol Dweck as it is a required read for the summer. If you don't have a copy yet, please visit the main office and sign out a copy. There is a required assignment associated with your reading that will be posted on July 1 and will be due by the start of the school year. The work will be accessed through our collective Google Classroom set up for summer reading. You must join the Google Classroom (UCONN ECE ENGLISH 1007 - SUMMER 2023) at this invitation to access the assignment and submit the summer work: https://classroom.google.com/c/NjEwMzcyMjEyNzcx?cjc=ny3unvy. Do not wait until the last minute to view the assignment for Mindset. You should be writing at the end of each chapter to meet the requirements. The assignment is due on the first day of school. I suggest you begin reading the book and work according to the directions in the classroom no later than August 1.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS
Read a book! Any book! Fiction, nonfiction, biography, memoir, graphic novel, comic book. Read magazines (print or online). Read news articles. You are always welcome to borrow books from Ms. Clifton's classroom. Reading helps your comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary, memory, empathy, and health!
Visit a Writing Lab teacher during a study hall or your lunch period for one-on-one help with writing assignments for any class or college application essays. Bring a copy of the assignment, a draft, and what specific aspects of your draft you'd like the teacher to examine (these can all be digital). The writing lab schedule is posted in your English teacher's classroom.

TIPS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Opt in to receive daily or weekly emails from Google Classroom about assignments your student missed, assignments due soon, and class announcements/homework. Email Ms. Clifton if you'd like to be added to this.
Read the Little RHAMbler newsletter that is put together by the journalism class and emailed by the principal every Friday. This newsletter features important announcements about clubs, field trips, counseling, and classes.
Let your children see you reading - books, newspapers, magazines, articles.
Encourage your children to be problem solvers. Teach them it's okay to fail and make mistakes, because that's one of the best ways to learn.
Instill in your children the value of education. Children in many parts of the world would give almost anything to have the opportunities and resources provided to RHAM's students.
